AIA Financial Services Consultant
I attended the National University of Singapore where I obtained my honors degree majoring in real estate in 2002. Having an interest in real estate coupled with a developing interest in financial planning & management then, helped spurred me to undertake courses concurrently to further my understanding in these areas.
Arising from my interest in financial planning and management, I began my journey as a financial planner with AIA in 1999 in the first year of undergraduate studies. I am also a Certified Financial Planner with the Financial Planning Association of Singapore since 2008.
I believe that an approach of understanding and recommending products targeted at clients’ prioritized needs done on a regular basis will help forge good faith, rapport and trust with my clients.

Enter Paul Kwan, an AIA Financial Services Consultant with more than 20 years in the wealth management field. On how he chose the timeworn road of financial planning, the steward himself has a story to share: As a 21-year-old young man and straight out of National Service, Paul started his career in financial planning in 1995. Without an established network, Paul built his contacts client by client – he remembers that fateful two years spent cold-canvassing for potential leads at Kallang MRT. Barely two weeks in, the toughness of the job almost made him give it up. Yet, being low on savings and having a financially-challenged family to support, the young man shouldered through.
Coming from a family with a history of cancer, Paul had since made his own connections and staunch beliefs in the need of purchasing insurance premiums to secure his life’s circumstances. Prior to his financial career, he had tanked some major setbacks: his father passed away due to liver cancer when Paul was a teenager; and his sister succumbed to breast cancer when she was young. These cruel and cold severances of part of his family from him made him realise the transience of life. Nonetheless, it gave him the insight into the need to be sufficiently insured: though it could not bring back his family, these premiums gave him the necessary comfort of financial coverage to see through his familial losses.
Having served beyond 20 years of service in the financial industry, our steward has been inducted into AIA’s Million Dollar Club, an inter-company recognition for AIA’s outstanding financial services consultants; AIA MDC (1997-2008), AIA Summit Club (2005-2019), AIA Centurion (2009-2018), AIA Superstar (2010-2019), and the Hall of Honour (2014). I graduated from NTU in year 2000. I major in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I always have a keen interest in investing, management of money, wealth accumulation and protection.
I started as a part-time financial services consultant during my university years. Life is challenging as I have to cope with my tedious study and setting aside 2-3 nights per week to look for business.
I decided to turn to full-time Financial Services Consultant with AIA when I graduated. Firstly, I find this career more rewarding and meaningful as compared to engineering jobs. Secondly I enjoy meeting up with clients to advice them on financing planning and having them well protected.
In the beginning, it is challenging as I have to do cold-calling and door-to-door knocking to look for new clients. I faced lots of rejection during the cold-calling and door knocking. However, I am still very positive and determine to press on.
After a few years in this career, I begin to enjoy the fruits of my labour. I qualified for convention and AIA sent me to New York, Shanghai, Sydney and Barcelona as my incentive trips.
I did some planning for my Auntie. After a few years, she got breast cancer and I helped her to process her hospitalization and critical illness claims for her. When I delivered the claim cheque to her, my auntie was so happy and thanked me unceasingly. Seeing our plans paid out really made me feel very happy and this gave meaning to my job as a Financial Services Consultant.
Life as a Financial Services Consultant is challenging in the beginning. Be prepared to work hard, willing to learn from leader, fellow colleagues and work together as a team will help to make the journey easier.

I had been in the financial advisory profession with AIA for 23 years.
A disturbing call I received on the second day of work was a turning point for me.
I first crossed path with insurance at age 18, during my short stint as a Personal Assistant with a competitor insurer.
It spurred my curiosity to embrace more knowledge about insurance and how it can benefit my loved ones and I.
Reeling from the shock that my colleague’s son got killed in his car park, I learnt to accept the harsh realities of life’s from this first death encounter.
Years later, after I graduated from Curtin University in Perth, majoring in Marketing and Public Relations, I pursued my curious interest as a Financial Services Consultant with AIA in 1996.
I started off as a mediocre performer. After 9 years in the profession, I had the fortune of meeting a mentor from AIA, whom unselfishly devoted her time to inspire me and breathe new lease of life and enthusiasm to this profession which I began to experience my career’s defining moments.
I achieved my first Sydney Mini Convention in 2006 and never looked back since.
